Australia's workplace regulator has published a guide to asking for unpaid leave to play Grand Theft Auto 6. It is practical advice, not a day off on order.

The Fair Work Ombudsman, the federal body that advises workers and employers on pay and leave rules, posted the guide on its official Instagram account on 6 October 2026, as shown in its Instagram post. The post speaks directly to anyone thinking of booking time off for launch day. It does not change the law. It explains how to work within it.

The guide sets out how unpaid leave works in Australia. In some cases, time off without pay is a right under the National Employment Standards, the legal minimum conditions for most Australian employees. In other cases, it only happens if the worker asks and the employer agrees. A day off for a video game falls into that second group.

Wanting to play Grand Theft Auto 6 does not create an automatic right to unpaid leave, the guide says. You can request it. Your employer decides. That is the whole message, delivered in plain language, according to Video Games Chronicle.

The advice points readers to the usual checks first. Look at your award or enterprise agreement, the documents that set pay and conditions for your job. Check company policy. Then make a clear request in writing, with dates and as much notice as possible. Refusal is allowed here. Approval is allowed too.

The release behind the post is set for 19 November, listed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Australia is included in the global launch. That is the date any leave request would need to cover.

What makes this stand out is who is saying it. Launch-week tips usually come from publishers, shops or fan pages. This time they come from the umpire. A regulator better known for shift rates and payslips is speaking the language of games.

For fans, this means expectations should stay flat. There is no special games clause. No shortcut. Just a normal conversation with a manager, held early and politely. Bring dates. Have a backup plan.

The post remains on the Ombudsman's Instagram page. The game will still be there after work.
