Prime Video Orders Karen Read Limited Series Starring Elizabeth Banks

Elizabeth Banks will play Karen Read in a new Prime Video series about the woman accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe.
Prime Video has given the as-yet untitled project a series order, Deadline reported on 8 October 2026. That order matters. It sends the drama straight to series, meaning no pilot is shot first. For anyone new to the terms, a pilot is a single trial episode made to test a show before a full season is approved.
The project is built as a limited series, meaning it is designed to tell one self-contained story in a single season, Deadline previously reported. That structure suits a true-crime dramatisation. The beginning, middle and end are set from the start.
The source is audio. The series is inspired by Karen, the Law&Crime and Audible Original podcast. Inspired by tells viewers the television scripts grow from that podcast, rather than starting from a blank page.
Banks will star as Read and executive produce. The acting credit puts her on screen in the central role. The producing credit puts her in the senior group that helps shape scripts, casting and creative direction across the season. It is the kind of dual role that gives a lead actor a say beyond performance.
Justin Noble will write the series and serve as showrunner. A showrunner is the writer in day-to-day charge, the person who keeps story, scripts and production aligned. It is one of the most senior jobs in television. Noble will also executive produce, giving him the same senior responsibility behind the camera.
The series hails from Warner Bros. Television, Brownstone Productions, David E. Kelley Productions, Audible and Law&Crime. In trade language, hails from names the studios and companies making the show. They hire the crew, build the schedule and deliver the finished episodes to the platform. Co-production spreads cost and responsibility across the group.
What this changes for viewers is straightforward. Development can end in many places. An order gives two hundred jobs a start date.
It lets a writers’ room map a full arc. It gives a contested real-life story a fixed path to the screen. Crews, writers and directors can now work to a series plan.
No further casting or scheduling detail was included in the order announcement. The confirmed core is platform, star, writer, source podcast and studio team. That is what Prime Video has now locked in.
