Paul Walter Hauser to Star in True-Story Crime Drama Garden City

Paul Walter Hauser will star in Garden City, a crime drama based on a true story.
The casting was reported by Deadline on 8 October. The film comes from Magenta Light Studios, an independent production company that develops and finances its own features. Production is scheduled to begin in Atlanta in January.
Hauser plays Dan Day. Day is a resident of Garden City, Kansas, whose life becomes entangled in a plot targeting the town's Somali Muslim community. That is the central character and situation disclosed so far.
The film is written and directed by John Curran. That means Curran has written the screenplay and will also direct the shoot. He previously directed Chappaquiddick, the political drama starring Jason Clarke as Ted Kennedy, according to Deadline.
Garden City is being produced by Bob Yari and Amanda Harvey alongside Hauser, Alex Gayner and Matt Cooper. A producer helps organise the film, from financing and hiring to overseeing the shoot. Hauser will therefore work on both sides of the camera, leading the cast and sharing producing duties.
Atlanta stands in for Kansas. The city is a regular base for film shoots, with studio space and crews that allow productions to recreate other American towns. Filming is expected to start in January, which sets the project on a clear path towards completion next year.
What makes this stand out is the shape of the story. A small town. A real case. One local man drawn into events around him. It gives Hauser a single, defined character to carry, and Curran a contained setting in which to tell it.
