Warner Chappell boss Guy Moot joins US publishers' board

Warner Chappell Music Chair and CEO Guy Moot has joined the Board of Directors of the National Music Publishers' Association.
The NMPA, the US trade organisation that represents music publishers and their songwriter partners, announced the appointment on Thursday, October 8, according to Music Business Worldwide.
The timing is tight. Moot took sole charge at Warner Chappell on October 1. That was one week before the board announcement.
Warner Chappell is the publishing arm of Warner Music Group. A music publisher handles song copyrights on behalf of songwriters, licensing their work and collecting royalties when it is used.
Moot joined Warner Chappell in April 2019. Before that he spent 30 years at the company now known as Sony Music Publishing, where he rose to President, Worldwide Creative and UK Managing Director.
The NMPA is led by President and CEO David Israelite. Founded in 1917, it is the trade association for the American music publishing industry, with a mandate to protect music copyrights at home and abroad, as set out by the NMPA.
Its board sits over live policy fights. In June, the NMPA announced industry-wide AI licensing deals with Udio and KLAY at its annual meeting. Those agreements cover how songs can be used to train and power AI music tools, an area where licensing terms are still new for most writers.
The group is also pressing for higher songwriter pay in a Copyright Royalty Board proceeding. That case will set US mechanical streaming rates, the royalties paid to publishers and songwriters when songs are streamed, for the 2028 to 2032 period. The Board is the US panel that sets those rates.
What makes this stand out is the calendar. Moot arrives on the board just as those AI deals move into practice and as the next five-year rate term takes shape. For listeners, none of this changes what plays next. For songwriters, it affects who gets paid, and how, when it does.
