Colin Jost and Danny Chun have created a new original comedy series called “6 Bed 1 Bath” without a major studio or streamer behind it.

The premise starts with a housing squeeze. Five flatmates in their 20s share one New York apartment with a man who has lived there since 1982. Each time his rent increased, he built another bedroom. The flat keeps growing.

Production recently wrapped in New York City, according to Variety. The series will premiere on free, ad-supported streaming services, meaning viewers can watch at no cost with adverts, including Tubi, Pluto TV and the Roku Channel.

That release plan skips the usual commission, where a network or platform orders and pays for a show. Jost and Chun instead teamed with independent Revue Studios, a company working outside the Hollywood studio system. Revue put up the upfront money and production support for “6 Bed 1 Bath” and organised the project around brand partnerships.

Those partnerships were put together by Revue alongside CAA Entertainment Partnerships, These Pictures and No Notes. The arrangement allowed Jost and Chun to retain full creative control, Variety reported. It was described as a brand-supported model intended to give creators greater freedom and to bring their work directly to audiences for free, as reported by Deadline.

Jost said he and Chun had found a new, innovative way to make the series outside the normal studio system.

The partnership goes back to their student days. Jost and Chun first worked together at the Harvard Lampoon, the university humour magazine that has trained many US comedy writers.

Jost joined “Saturday Night Live” in 2005 and now co-anchors “Weekend Update” with Michael Che. He is a three-time Emmy winner. Chun began his career writing for “The Simpsons” before joining “The Office.” Both credits trace long runs in network television comedy.

“6 Bed 1 Bath” is executive produced by Jost, Scarlett Johansson, Chun, Andrew Singer, Jeff Grosvenor, Jonathan Lia, Ryan Case, Molly McMillen and Jon Liebman. An executive producer credit, in television terms, typically covers senior figures who oversee creative direction and financing.

For viewers, this means no subscription is needed to watch. The show will land where the barrier is lowest, on free services supported by advertising, with the creators holding the rights to how it was made.
