Aaron Sorkin to Receive Maverick Award at Newport Beach Festival

Aaron Sorkin will receive the Maverick Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival.
The writer-director will be honoured during the festival's 27th edition, which runs Oct. 15-22, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The celebration is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17. It will take place on the Mainstage at Fashion Island, the festival's open-air venue for public talks and presentations.
The programme will begin at 11 a.m. with a career-retrospective conversation. The discussion will look back across Sorkin's work in film and television and will be recorded for The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast. That podcast is a long-form interview series in which awards contenders and past winners discuss their careers in front of an audience. The Maverick Award presentation will follow immediately after the recording ends.
Admission is free. An RSVP, a reservation made in advance, is still required to secure a place at the Sorkin session. General tickets for the wider 27th Newport Beach Film Festival are now on sale through the festival's official site, giving filmgoers access to screenings and other events across the eight-day run.
Sorkin arrives in Newport Beach with a new cinema release in circulation. He is the writer-director of The Social Reckoning, according to GoldDerby. The film is a follow-up to 2010's The Social Network and centres on the harmful effects of Facebook. It is scheduled for release on October 9, which places the Oct. 17 festival appearance just days after it reaches screens.
What makes this stand out is the format. The audience will watch a podcast recording take place live, rather than simply hearing the edited version later. The award will then be presented on the same stage without a break. That structure gives the morning a continuous flow from interview to honour.
For fans, this means straightforward access. No ticket purchase is needed for the Mainstage session itself, only advance registration. The 11 a.m. start makes it suitable for day visitors, and Fashion Island is set up to accommodate a daytime crowd.
The festival runs for eight days across Newport Beach venues. This year's supporting partners include Cadillac, Citizens Private Bank, UCI Health, the Los Angeles Times, Fashion Island and the City of Newport Beach. Full programme listings, RSVP details and ticket information are available from the festival.
