Crystal Lake promises a bloodier start to the Friday the 13th story

Camp Crystal Lake is back, and its creator says it will bleed more than it ever did on film.
Crystal Lake, an eight-episode prequel to the Friday the 13th films, meaning a story set before the murders moviegoers know, premieres on Peacock on 15 October 2026, according to Peacock. Creator Brad Caleb Kane, who made the series as a prequel origin story for the franchise, told a New York Comic Con audience the show is “a lot more brutal” than the films, with “really creative kills” and a lot of bodies, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Kane spoke at a Thursday panel at the convention alongside Linda Cardellini, William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom and Callum Vinson. Catlett, Kessler and Scoggins all star alongside Cardellini in the series. The premiere episode was also set to screen for fans at the event.
The story starts with Pamela Voorhees, the mother of Jason Voorhees. Cardellini, a four-time Emmy nominee, plays her. Kane said he always pictured Cardellini in the role. The series spends a couple of episodes on Pamela’s blossoming, journey and psychology before the wider horror takes hold.
Do not expect the hockey mask. Kane said the series could not include it because of where it falls in the narrative timeline. That fits the early setting. In the original Friday the 13th film, young Jason was shown only in obscured looks in flashbacks to his drowning at Crystal Lake.
Instead, the writers looked to deeper franchise lore to build Jason’s early years. Kane said the team drew on the novelisation of Friday the 13th Part 2 for Jason’s background, including Jason in the woods after crawling out of the lake. The production then went back to source. It filmed in Blairstown, New Jersey, in the original woods where the first film was shot.
Longtime fans will get some direct echoes. Kane said the series includes shot-by-shot recreations of things seen in the movies that re-contextualise what viewers think they know.
What makes this stand out is the order of events. This is Pamela’s story first and Jason’s second. Viewers will see how that balance shifts when all eight episodes arrive on Peacock next week.
