Keri Russell told longtime partner Matthew Rhys he did not have to thank her if he won at the 2026 Emmys. Then he won twice. He left her out of both speeches.

Russell explained the pact on Chelsea Handler's Dear Chelsea podcast. She told Rhys to take her "off his plate" before the ceremony to ease his nerves and give him one less name to worry about if he had to get up and speak. Page Six first reported her comments, with details carried by The Hollywood Reporter on 9 October 2026.

Rhys needed the advice. He collected two lead acting prizes at the 78th Emmy Awards in September 2026. He won best actor in a comedy series for Widow's Bay, in which he plays Mayor Tom Loftis, and best actor in a limited series, meaning a story told across a single closed season, for The Beast in Me. The Television Academy lists Loftis as his Widow's Bay role and credits him with four Emmy wins in total.

Russell watched both wins from inside the room. She accompanied Rhys to the ceremony, where she was also a nominee for her work on Netflix's The Diplomat. Rhys accepted the Widow's Bay prize in September 2026, and did not mention Russell in either of his two acceptance speeches on the night.

What makes this stand out is simple. It was not an oversight in the usual awards-show sense. Russell said she had cleared him in advance, so he could concentrate on getting through the speech rather than worrying about forgetting someone under pressure.

The history between the two stretches back more than a decade. Rhys and Russell have been a couple since starring together on The Americans. On the FX drama they played Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings, married Soviet officers living undercover in America.

That show gave Rhys his breakthrough at the Emmys. He won best actor in a drama series in 2018 for his work opposite Russell. It was his first Emmy win, and it came after several nominations without a prize.

Eight years later he returned as a double winner. The result puts him alone on the honours list. He is the only performer to have won Emmys for best comedy, drama and limited series actor.

For viewers catching up, the lesson is organised chaos. Awards nights reward preparation. This time, preparation meant permission not to say a name.
