Prime Video will launch its historical drama Bloodaxe on 20 January 2027.

The date was announced alongside a first-look teaser from New York Comic Con, as reported by Deadline. The series will stream exclusively on Prime Video.

Bloodaxe follows the rise of Erik Bloodaxe, played by Xavier Molyneux, and his wife Gunnhild, Mother of Kings, played by Jessica Madsen. The story centres on the couple's bid for power in the Viking age.

The series comes from the team behind Vikings. Michael Hirst and Horatio Hirst are the co-creators, showrunners — meaning the people in day-to-day charge of the series — writers and executive producers.

MGM Television is producing the series. Additional executive producers are Morgan O'Sullivan, Steve Stark, Arturo Interian, John Weber and Sheila Hockin.

Work is already continuing beyond the first season. Season 2 is in production in Ireland, a second season ordered before the first has aired. That keeps the same production base and crew employed without a gap.

Three new cast members have joined for Season 2. Maddy Ambus, Steven Brand and Lasse Steen have been added to the ensemble.

For fans, this means a long wait comes with a short payoff. The first season is still more than three months away, yet the second is already being filmed.

At New York Comic Con, Prime Video positioned Bloodaxe as one of its headline titles. The company gave the show a slot on the Main Stage, billed as an exclusive first look at the series, according to Amazon MGM Studios. Amazon MGM Studios now lists Bloodaxe as a Featured Original Series on its press site.
