Jessica Lange set one rule for Horror Story return: all four roles

Jessica Lange would only return to American Horror Story if she could play everyone. All four of them.
That was the condition she set for season 13, she told a PaleyFest panel on Thursday night in New York City. The hourlong chat reunited the Coven cast to talk through the show's legacy and its currently airing crossover season, meaning a run that mixes characters from earlier years, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The panel featured Lange, Sarah Paulson, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman and co-executive producer Lou Eyrich. Eyrich accepted the inaugural PaleyFest Award on behalf of the FX horror anthology, meaning each season tells a new story with many of the same actors, from creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk.
Lange had not been a series regular, meaning a lead actor contracted for a full season, since season four, Freak Show. She later returned as a guest star for season eight, Apocalypse. For season 13, she agreed to come back if she could revisit Constance Langdon from Murder House, Sister Jude from Asylum, Fiona Goode from Coven and Elsa Mars from Freak Show.
Paulson said she was already thinking about a return when Murphy called about season 13. She said yes fast. The reasons were simple. Lange was on board, and a Coven season would bring the larger group back together.
New Orleans made it happen. Twice. Lange said she had proposed shooting the show there. Paulson said Coven was born out of that idea to film in the city.
Lange also shaped what came next. Freak Show was her idea. She pitched it to Murphy and sent him a Taschen book of circuses. She named Elsa Mars as her favourite character and Freak Show as her favourite season to film.
Paulson picked a different favourite. Hers is Asylum. She joked that she wished she had played Lana Winters and blamed Evan Peters for missing out on the part.
For newer viewers, the Coven company came together in 2013. Kathy Bates was cast as Lange's former best friend turned enemy, Emma Roberts joined the third-season cast, and Sidibe joined alongside Bates, Lange, Peters, Paulson and Taissa Farmiga. Bates later earned a supporting actress Emmy for playing Madame Delphine LaLaurie in Coven. Paulson will return as Cordelia, her Coven witch, in season 13 alongside Lange, as reported by Variety.
The New York panel was staged as part of PaleyFest NY 2026. Lange was a late addition, joining previously announced panelists including Paulson and Lourd, according to the Paley Center.
What makes this stand out is how much of the show was decided in the room. A location pitch became a season. A picture book became another. And this time, one actor's ask brought four old faces back.
