NBC has fired Gail Lerner, the co-creator and showrunner of its upcoming sitcom Newlyweds, two weeks before the series is due to premiere.

The dismissal was reported by Variety on 9 October. The comedy remains scheduled to debut on 23 October.

Lerner announced the firing herself in an Instagram post. NBC confirmed to Variety that creative differences led to the decision. The first six episodes were made under Lerner's leadership as showrunner, the person who runs a series day to day and oversees scripts.

Newlyweds stars Téa Leoni and Tim Daly as two people who marry quickly. It was co-created by Lerner with Jamie Lee Curtis, who also appears in a recurring guest star role. Lerner is a writer and director whose credits include Black-ish.

The series is set to air on Friday, 23 October at 8:30 p.m. ET, according to NBC. It will air directly after Happy's Place on NBC, with episodes streaming next day on Peacock.

The show was one of two comedies NBC picked up for the 2026-2027 broadcast season, the traditional September-to-May slate for US network television. Leoni and Daly are a couple in real life. Curtis and Lerner are credited as executive producers.

What makes this stand out is the timing. A change at the top after six episodes are already in the can means viewers will see work overseen by Lerner when the series launches, even as the network prepares for someone else to take it forward.
