Blumhouse to Turn Horror Game Amanda the Adventurer Into Film With MatPat

Blumhouse is developing a film based on the indie video game series Amanda the Adventurer, with YouTube creator Matthew “MatPat” Patrick leading the project, Variety reported on 9 October 2026. Patrick and Blumhouse head Jason Blum shared the news on stage during the company’s Blumfest panel at New York Comic Con. The panel is Blumhouse’s showcase at the fan convention, used for cast appearances and new announcements.
The property comes from MANGLEDmaw Games, the independent developer behind the Amanda the Adventurer puzzle-horror franchise, according to Variety. Puzzle-horror is a simple mix: the player solves puzzles while a scary story plays out. As an indie series, it was built without a major publisher, a route that often means a small team and tight budget but full creative control. Turning that kind of game into a film means translating play into plot, keeping what players recognise while building a story that works for people who never picked up a controller.
Patrick is the former host of the Theory channels on YouTube, programmes that picked apart hidden clues in games, films and television. His pact with Blumhouse is a multi-project deal, meaning the studio has signed him for more than one film, with Amanda the Adventurer planned as the first, according to Variety. That kind of agreement centres on development: finding stories, attaching talent and guiding them toward production.
Epic Pictures chief executive Patrick Ewald will also produce, working alongside Patrick and Blum. A producer in this context hires key staff, oversees the budget and steers the film from script to screen. No writers, directors or cast members have been confirmed. The team is in talks with potential writers and directors, industry language for conversations that have not yet become signed deals, and early talks of this kind are normal before a script exists.
For fans, this means the film is real but early. Patrick built his audience by explaining games to viewers who never played them. That skill now gets tested on a bigger screen. The core team is set, but the script, the look and the release date are still to come.
