Contenders Film: London brings Bird, Boyle, Leigh and Cruz to Ham Yard stage

Pixar, Laika, Danny Boyle and Penélope Cruz share one stage on Saturday as Deadline's Contenders Film: London returns to the Ham Yard Hotel.
The day-long showcase on 10 October 2026 brings together directors, writers, actors and craftspeople behind this season's awards hopefuls, according to the lineup published by Deadline. Panels run through animation, British drama, documentary and international titles. Fans can follow along under hashtag #DeadlineContenders.
It opens with animation. Pixar's Ray Gunn starts the day with writer-director-producer Brad Bird and composer Michael Giacchino. The film is a neo-noir science fiction mystery, a dark detective story set in a future city.
Laika follows with Wildwood, its magical stop-motion fantasy. Stop-motion means characters are moved by hand and photographed frame by frame. Director-producer Travis Knight will appear with cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, composer Dario Marianelli and costume designer Deb Cook.
British stories take centre stage next. Director Danny Boyle, writer James Graham and actor Jack O'Connell will discuss Ink. The film tells the story of Rupert Murdoch's takeover of British tabloid The Sun in 1969.
Mike Leigh returns to the event with Tender Loving Care. He will be joined by star Kate O'Flynn. The film follows a professional carer trying to rebuild her life after a breakup.
Documentary gets its moment with Everest: The Other Side. Directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin will appear with ski mountaineer Jim Morrison.
Two American dramas look at very different lives. Writer-director Guy Nattiv and actor Carrie Coon will discuss The Liberation, an '80s-set story of a woman who leaves her family to join an all-female cult. Being Heumann, directed by Siân Heder, stars Ruth Madeley as disability rights activist Judith Heumann. Madeley will appear with casting directors Bernard Telsey and Adam Caldwell. Heder last came to Contenders with CODA, which won the Oscar for best picture in 2021.
The international lineup is strong. Writer-director Marie Kreutzer and actor Léa Seydoux will present Gentle Monster. Writer-director-producers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi will present La Bola Negra with actors Miguel Bernardeau, Guitarricadelafuente, Carlos González and Penélope Cruz.
Cruz will appear twice. She also joins writer-director Florian Zeller for Bunker. In that film, Cruz and Javier Bardem play a married couple under strain over the husband's work building a safe room for a billionaire.
Big-scale film-making closes the bill. Cinematographer Greig Fraser and production designer Charles Wood will represent Project Hail Mary, the space adventure adapted from Andy Weir's novel.
What makes this stand out is the timing. The showcase lands in the middle of London's autumn film season. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey was still playing to sold-out houses at the BFI Imax on the Southbank nearly three months after release.
For fans, this means access. Deadline said it will launch a streaming hub on Monday with video of every panel.
