Telo MT1 Tested: A Mini-Sized Electric Pickup With Full-Size Specs

The Telo MT1, listed by Car and Driver as the 2027 Telo MT1, is a battery-electric pickup about the size of a two-door Mini Cooper that was test-driven in San Carlos, California. MT1 stands for "mini truck" The Verge. The drive is the most complete public test so far of what Telo describes as an all-electric mini pickup for U.S. cities.
Telo was founded in 2022 by Jason Marks, Forrest North and Yves Behar. North, a former Tesla battery engineer, is cofounder and CTO. Marks is cofounder and CEO of Telo Trucks The Verge. The company is building a compact, modular electric pickup and showed its preproduction MT1 prototype in Los Angeles The Verge. It later raised $20 million to build the compact electric pickup Reuters.
Packaging is the central point. The MT1 fits inside the footprint of a subcompact vehicle Telo. It has a very short nose and four doors, with an almost cab-over layout that puts front passengers nearly over the front axle The Verge. MotorTrend, which published a prototype first drive, calls it America's smallest electric truck MotorTrend.
The bed is still large. The production-intent truck has a 96-inch bed The Verge. In its earlier prototype drive, MotorTrend described a Tacoma-size bed MotorTrend. That short overall length with a long cargo floor puts attention on cab intrusion, rear overhang, and how the midgate, the folding wall between cab and bed that extends cargo space, works.
Power figures match larger trucks. The MT1 makes 500 hp Telo. Telo estimates 0-60 mph in four seconds. Its tow rating is 8,000 lbs The Verge. In a Mini-scale wheelbase, those outputs put pressure on cooling, traction-control tuning, and stability while towing. That will need instrumented testing to confirm.
Battery and charging details have changed across announcements. The standard 77 kWh pack, a measure of stored energy, is rated for an estimated 260 miles of range. The MT1 supports 400 kW sustained charging Telo. Telo also lists a 106 kWh pack with an estimated 350 miles of range and fast charging from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes Telo. The Long Range battery upgrade costs $3,980 in the online configurator Telo.
A 400 kW rate on a 77 kWh pack means a charge rate above 5C, or more than five times the pack's hourly capacity. That implies heavy-duty wiring, switches, and cooling. The real curve will depend on battery preconditioning, warming the battery to the right temperature first, and charger power. It needs to be checked on a 400 kW-capable charger, not only on paper.
Telo also lists a cab roof with integrated solar panels for $1,500 in the configurator Telo. The company says its vehicles use sensors to predict and classify collisions before they happen Telo. Neither system is detailed in verified specs to the level of sensor type, computing hardware, or daily solar energy.
The broader context here will be familiar to readers who watched PCs and smartphones fit more capability into smaller boxes. Small trucks were once the entry point to the U.S. pickup market, then grew larger and more expensive. Telo is testing whether electrification, with its flat skateboard chassis and no need for a long hood to house an engine, can reverse that growth without losing rated capability.
In my view, the MT1 matters less as a horsepower claim than as a test of packaging and city use. A subcompact footprint with a six-to-eight-foot load floor, four doors, and 8,000-pound towing could change where a truck can park, charge, and work. My children learned to drive when backup cameras and small crossovers were already normal, and they expect utility to fit the city. If Telo delivers the rated range, sustained charge rate, and crash safety in that size at a cost it can manufacture, it will have solved a harder problem than going fast in a straight line.
