Shane Gillis swore live on Saturday Night Live. The sketch did not stop.

The comedian let slip an accidental F-bomb during a Dr Seuss-inspired sketch while hosting the show, according to Variety. The 10 October episode paired him with musical guest Rosalía.

The sketch turned on Green Eggs and Ham, the children's story about a persistent character trying to get someone to try an unusual meal. Gillis played Zackary, a protective son who steps into a bedtime reading to defend his elderly father. Cast member Andrew Dismukes played Sam-I-Am, the character doing the pressuring, urging the father again and again to try green eggs and ham.

The swear landed in the middle of that back-and-forth. As Zackary pushed back, Gillis said, "He doesn't f—g like them!" The line appeared to be off-script, an accidental break rather than a written joke.

The cast stayed in character. Cast member Mikey Day appeared as the Lorax, another Dr Seuss creation with a moustached face. He pointed straight at the slip. "You're a loser and you said a bad word!" he told Zackary.

Gillis did not dodge it. "Yes, I did," he replied. The sketch moved on. The line was brief, but it was audible.

Gillis's return to the stage carries its own history. He was hired by Saturday Night Live as a featured player, meaning a junior, entry-level member of the cast, in 2019. The job ended days later after clips from his podcast resurfaced featuring racist and homophobic remarks, according to Variety.

He came back later as a host, meaning a guest star who appears in sketches rather than a regular cast member. He hosted in February 2024 and again in March 2025. The 10 October show was his third time hosting.

For viewers, this means the slip becomes part of the night's story. Live comedy leaves no room for a retake, so a stray word stays in. The cast's choice was to name it and keep moving.
