Tarantino to make stage debut with Sacha Baron Cohen West End comedy

Quentin Tarantino will make his debut as a stage writer with The Popinjay Cavalier, starring Sacha Baron Cohen in the title role. The production will play the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End in 2027.
The plans were confirmed on 11 October 2026, according to WhatsOnStage. The West End is London's main commercial theatre district.
Tarantino will both write and direct the play. That dual credit puts him in charge of the script and the staging. It is his first credited job writing for the stage.
The run will start with previews on 23 February 2027. Previews are early performances held before the official opening, when a company can still make changes. Opening night, also called press night, follows on 18 March, and the show is currently booking to 13 June 2027.
The story is set in 1830s Europe. The company describes it as a comedy of deception and disguise. The inspiration is given as the swashbuckling epics of stage and screen, meaning fast-moving adventure stories built around swordplay, escapes and mistaken identity.
An earlier billing called the play a "rambunctious comedy of deception," according to The Guardian. That description was reported in September 2026.
The production is presented by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions. In theatre, a presenter is the company or partnership that raises the money and takes responsibility for putting the show on. Sonia Friedman Productions lists an official page for the title on its website.
Tickets will start at £25, the producers said. More than 16,000 seats across the run will be priced under £50. The price information was included in the October announcement for the Phoenix run.
News of the pairing first surfaced in September 2026. Deadline reported on 10 September that Cohen would star in Tarantino's West End play in 2027. The story was by Greg Evans and Baz Bamigboye.
What makes this stand out is the combination. A writer-director credited on stage for the first time, with a title role already named, gives audiences a clear shape for the 2027 run. For fans, this means a fixed period from February previews to a June booking close, with a large block of tickets under £50 held across the house.
