Sylvia Chang backs Malaysian drama One Fine Day at Busan market

Sylvia Chang has joined Malaysian director Tan Seng Kiat's drama One Fine Day as executive producer as the film seeks partners at Busan, reported Variety.
The project is pitching at the Asian Project Market, the section of the Busan International Film Festival where directors bring unfinished films to find money and distributors. This year's market, the 29th edition, runs from October 10 to 13 within the festival's Asian Contents and Film Market, according to the Asian Project Market.
One Fine Day is listed as a Malaysia-Taiwan project. Tan based the story on a real child murder in Malaysia, and has wanted to make it for more than five years.
The money search is direct. The team is looking for co-producers, financing and pre-sales, which are deals to sell distribution rights before a film is finished. The credited producers are Elyce Chin, Lim Shu Jia and E.N. Lee, with ONE FINE DAY PRODUCTION HOUSE SDN. named as the production company.
The project arrives with an early prize. It won the TCCF 2025 APM Next Award, a development award handed out on the festival circuit. It is one of 30 official selections picked for Busan this year from submissions that closed on May 18.
That wider list includes work connected to several familiar names in Asian cinema, including Anthony Chen, Mouly Surya, Reza Rahadian and Fran Borgia, reported Variety. For a small project, that company matters. It puts a first-time market title in the same catalogue buyers flip through for established directors.
Chang is a veteran actor and filmmaker. She received the 2025 Busan festival's Camellia Award for contributions to women in cinema, reported the Taipei Times. Tan is also developing a separate comedy titled The Supermum and Three Stickmen.
What makes this stand out is the pairing of heavy material with market mechanics. A difficult true case must still be built line by line: budget, partners, territories sold. Busan is where that work starts.
