Queen Camilla says King Charles keeps interrupting her reading before dinner — by laughing out loud at his own book.

The Queen said she and the King read together quietly every evening before dinner, in remarks reported on 12 October 2026. It sounds peaceful. It is not always peaceful. Hello Magazine

She is deep in her book. He erupts. She loses her place.

She called the habit “very off-putting”. She said once she hears the King roaring with laughter, she struggles to get back into her own story.

The King, she said, loves biographies and the Jeeves & Wooster novels by P.G. Wodehouse, the comic books about a hapless gentleman and his clever valet. That explains the noise. Wodehouse is built for belly laughs.

Camilla disclosed the ritual in a new BBC documentary about reading. The programme is scheduled to air on BBC Two, the BBC’s channel for arts, documentaries and specialist factual shows. Economic Times

She also spoke in the programme about her own teenage reading, described in an earlier report as surprising teenage secrets. Reuters titled its 9 October 2026 report on the interview ‘Queen Camilla on the joy of reading despite king’s laughter and her tears’. Reuters

What makes this stand out is how ordinary it is. No state banquet. No carriage. Just two people reading before supper, and one of them laughing too loudly.

For fans, this means a rare glimpse of the marriage at rest. The Queen reads. The King laughs. Dinner waits.
