King Charles III laughs so loudly at his evening book that Queen Camilla says she loses her place.

The Queen described how the couple often read just before sitting down to dinner. She hears the King, in her words, "roaring with laughter" at his novel and finds it so off-putting that she cannot get back into her own book, according to Royal Central.

The culprit is comic fiction. Queen Camilla said the King is a great fan of P.G. Wodehouse, the English humourist best known for his Jeeves and Wooster stories about a hapless gentleman and his quick-witted valet. He laughs so much that she struggles to concentrate.

She spoke about their reading habits in 'The Book That Changed My Life', a BBC Arts documentary listed for BBC Two at 9pm on 14 October and available in the UK on BBC iPlayer. The programme follows the Queen as she talks to four people about the books that transformed their lives.

Her own teenage reading gets a mention. Queen Camilla said she picked up 'Lady Chatterley's Lover', D.H. Lawrence's once-banned novel of love and class, as a teenager and was transfixed by it.

Reading is long-standing public work for the Queen. She established the charity now called The Queen's Reading Room in 2021 to promote literature. The BBC says the new film explores the transformative power of reading and was broadcast in the National Year of Reading 2026, according to BBC Media Centre.

For viewers, this means a rare domestic detail. No palace ceremony. Just two books, two readers, and one very loud laugh breaking the quiet.
