Coventry sweep Newcastle aside for second straight win

Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 to climb out of the Premier League relegation zone.
It was their second win in a row. It was also a night when the whole ground felt the lift. Coventry started the evening in 19th place and finished it outside the bottom three, the places that go down at the end of the season.
The game was played at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday 12 October. Kick-off was at 8pm BST in Matchweek 7 of the 2026/27 season, with live coverage on Sky Sports Premier League.
Coventry flew out of the blocks. Jack Rudoni scored a sixth-minute penalty to make it 1-0. Sidiki Cherif then added a second to put Frank Lampard's side 2-0 up.
Newcastle hit back. Sven Botman pulled a goal back to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes left. For a moment, the game was tight again.
Then Coventry's bench changed it. Substitutes Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni both scored late on to take the score to 4-1 and seal the points The Guardian.
The result stung Newcastle. They arrived in the middle of the table and could have climbed to fourth with a win. Instead they left with nothing.
For Coventry, the run is building. They had already won away at Nottingham Forest before this match. Back-to-back wins have moved a newly promoted team in the right direction.
This is Coventry's first season back in the English top flight since 2000-01. Lampard is the manager leading that return.
Cherif was a summer signing from Fenerbahce for £21m. Another new striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, joined from Nottingham Forest for £17m but missed this game through a three-game suspension.
What makes this stand out is the timing. Two wins, six days apart, and a loud home crowd behind them. Coventry looked like a team learning fast.
