Jeremy Renner says Hawkeye will sit out Avengers: Doomsday, and joked the team will probably lose without him.

Renner confirmed he was not asked back for the next Avengers film, Variety reported on Oct. 13. He delivered the news with humour. No Hawkeye, no win.

Avengers: Doomsday is set for release on Dec. 18, according to the same report. It is the next big team-up entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the linked series of Marvel films and television shows. The date puts it squarely in the year-end holiday corridor.

Renner has played Clint Barton, the bow-and-arrow hero known as Hawkeye, since the early 2010s. His credits include The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Endgame, Variety noted. He also made brief appearances in Thor and Captain America: Civil War.

It is not for lack of interest. In 2025, Renner said he was open to returning to Marvel, including for a second season of the Hawkeye television series. That keeps the door open. It just will not happen on Doomsday.

The film will still bring heavy firepower. Robert Downey Jr. will appear as an opponent of the Avengers, Yahoo reported on Oct. 12. Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez and Pedro Pascal are also listed among the stars, according to Marvel.

For fans, this means a familiar face will be missing from the line-up. Renner was one of the original six Avengers on screen. His joke lands because of that history.
