HSC 2026 Opens: 75,000 NSW Students Sit English Paper 1

Roughly 75,000 Year 12 students across New South Wales sat HSC English Paper 1 on 13 October 2026, opening the written examination period. The Guardian
The paper was the scheduled first-day exam for the cohort. It was held on a Tuesday. Candidates were asked to address how the composer (the author or maker) of their prescribed text (the set book or work they studied) offers chances to examine assumptions about human strength and vulnerability. At Canley Vale High School in Sydney's west, about 200 students sat the English 1 paper. The school identified English teacher Alana Miller and principal Effie Niarchos among its staff. The figure gives a sense of scale at one centre. Statewide coordination sits above it.
That coordination rests with the NSW Education Standards Authority, or NESA. NESA sets syllabuses (the official course guides), assessments, and teaching and school standards for all schools in NSW. It oversees the regulation of schools. All teachers need active accreditation with NESA to teach in NSW. NESA also provides past HSC exam papers, standards materials, marking feedback and guidelines. The timetable followed a familiar pattern. Nearly 75,000 students sat the 2025 NSW HSC written exams, which began on a Thursday with English. ABC The 2021 NSW HSC English paper opened a four-week exam period that had been scheduled for October but was delayed due to the Delta outbreak. ABC
The broader context here is routine operation at very large scale. Like runners starting from the same line before taking different paths, the full cohort faces the same task structure first before the timetable splits into subject electives. Prescribed texts differ. The analytical demand does not. Every candidate must move from textual detail outward to an assumption, then test that assumption.
In my view, the wording choice matters for examiners and classrooms alike. Strength and vulnerability are paired terms. They invite candidates to locate tension inside character, voice, form or structure, rather than treating the two qualities as separate topics. The verb matters too. To examine assumptions requires students to name what a reader might expect about resilience or frailty and then show how compositional choices confirm, complicate or displace it.
Looking at what this means for the weeks ahead, the English result will function as an anchor. It is the one written performance shared across diverse pathways, school sectors and regions. Attention will now turn to conduct, marking consistency and the release of standards materials that allow teachers and students to calibrate performance against expectations.
