Hunkkaar: JioHotstar drama spotlit as global breakout

A 17-year-old's accusation against a powerful spiritual leader drives Hunkkaar, the six-part Indian drama streaming on JioHotstar.
Known locally as Hunkkaar: The Roar, the series has been picked out by Deadline in its Global Breakouts strand, which spotlights television shows and films performing in their home territories, according to Deadline. Six episodes. One closed story.
The plot centres on Meenu Rawat, played by Aneet Padda, who accuses Baapji, played by Sunil Chakosi, of sexual assault. The allegation is fictional and forms the premise of the drama. The claim splits the country.
JioHotstar's official synopsis says the teenager's accusation against a revered cult leader sparks a national conflict. It frames the story around the line between faith and justice as the truth unravels, according to JioHotstar.
The programme was co-created by Karan D. Kapadia and Nitya Mehra. That credit means the pair originated the series and shaped its writing and direction. It is a miniseries, meaning a drama designed to tell one complete story rather than to return across multiple seasons.
It is executive produced by Priyanka Chopra. An executive producer backs a production at senior level and helps guide its creative and business decisions, rather than running day-to-day filming. Chopra's involvement comes through Purple Pebble Pictures, one of the four production companies behind the show.
The producers are Applause Entertainment, Birla Studios, Purple Pebble Pictures and Mangata Films. The project began at Kapadia's Mangata Films before Applause Entertainment boarded to produce. Applause is also listed as the distributor and rights holder, meaning it controls sales and licensing of the series to platforms and other buyers.
For viewers outside India, this means the series arrives as a finished six-part run. There is no confirmed renewal or second season. The focus, for now, is its performance at home.
