King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain visited Ceuta on Oct. 13, 2026, the first official visit by a Spanish monarch in 19 years. Ceuta is a Spanish-run city on the coast of North Africa that Morocco claims as its own. The trip came one day after the couple led Spain's National Day events in Madrid.

They landed by helicopter at the Ceuta heliport at 12:15 p.m. and drove to the Plaza de la Constitucion, the central square. By about 12:30 they were on foot in the city center, according to Spanish press reports El País. Crowds lined the route waving Spanish flags and cheering, in a welcome described as an affirmation of Spanish identity Yahoo News.

At city hall, the couple was received by Juan Jesus Vivas, president of the Autonomous City of Ceuta. That title makes him the top local official under Spain's system for self-governing cities. The king received the ceremonial staff of office, was handed a key to the city and signed the guest book Town & Country. The program also included a working meeting with members of the local governing council and civic groups.

For American readers, Ceuta works like a small state capital that happens to sit on another continent. It covers about 18.5 square miles and has about 84,000 residents. It sits at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar and shares a land border with Morocco. Spain has held it continuously since 1580. It became formally self-governing, what Spain calls an autonomous city, in 1995.

That history is why the visit draws attention beyond Spain. Morocco does not recognize Spanish control of Ceuta or nearby Melilla and calls both occupied Moroccan land. The last official royal visit, by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia in 2007, prompted Morocco to recall its ambassador to Spain. King Mohammed VI of Morocco condemned that trip as a “nostalgic act from a decidedly bygone era.”

The Ceuta stop opened a two-day tour. Spain’s palace calendar lists an official visit to Melilla, Spain’s other North African city, on Oct. 14. It is Felipe’s first visit to either city in his 12-year reign, which began after his father’s abdication Reuters. The 2026 visit took place during renewed tension with Morocco over a migrant influx and border crisis, according to France 24.

The couple arrived fresh from the Oct. 12 National Day parade at the Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo in Madrid, joined by the Princess of Asturias, the heir to the throne, and Infanta Sofia, her younger sister. Infanta is the Spanish title for a king’s daughter who is not the heir. They later hosted the traditional holiday reception at the Royal Palace of Madrid.

What makes this stand out is the mix of routine and weight. Handshakes, a guest book and a walk through town. Behind them sits a centuries-old dispute that still shapes daily life on both sides of the border fence.
