Michael Stipe will release the first single from his debut solo album on New Year's Eve 2026, with the full album to follow in May 2027.

He confirmed the timing in an interview with the LA Times, as reported by Pitchfork on 13 October 2026. The album does not yet have a title. That makes the dates the first firm release plan for a solo record he has discussed for several years.

Stipe is making the album with producer Andrew Watt and musician Andy LeMaster. Watt is credited as a co-writer and producer across recent pop and rock releases, while LeMaster has a long working history with Stipe. No label, tracklist or format details have been confirmed.

Listeners have already heard one song. Earlier in 2026, Stipe performed "The Rest of Ever" on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. He also discussed the planned solo album during that appearance, according to Rolling Stone AU.

His official website currently promotes a separate track, 'I Played the Fool', with a Listen Now link. It is not confirmed whether that song or "The Rest of Ever" will act as the New Year's Eve single.

The timeline follows a long build-up. Stipe told The New York Times in December 2023 that he had hoped the album would arrive in early 2023. That date passed without a release. The new plan puts the record more than four years after that earlier expectation.

For fans, this means a wait with markers. A single closes 2026. An album opens the summer release season in 2027. After years of talk, there are now dates to count down to.
