Atlético strike early and late to beat Manchester United 2-0

Atlético Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0 in the Champions League at the Metropolitano in Madrid on 13 October.
Pablo Barrios scored after 53 seconds to give the hosts the perfect start. Ademola Lookman added the second goal late on to seal the win, according to The Guardian.
The Champions League is Europe's top club competition. The best teams from England, Spain and other leagues meet in midweek games through the autumn and spring.
Atlético could hardly have asked for more. Barrios struck inside the first minute. The stadium erupted. From there the Spanish side controlled the ball.
They held 66% possession at half-time. Possession is simply a team's share of time on the ball. That figure told the story of the first half.
United were led by manager Michael Carrick in Madrid. They stayed in the game at 1-0 for a long stretch. Then came the key turning point.
Defender Leny Yoro was shown a red card late in the match when the score was still 1-0. A red card means a player is sent off and cannot be replaced. United had to finish with ten men.
Atlético made the extra man count. Lookman, listed by UEFA as Atlético's No. 11 forward, scored the second goal to close out the night, as confirmed on UEFA's official line-ups page.
The result reversed a recent meeting between the clubs. United had beaten Atlético 2-1 in a club friendly on 1 August 2026. This was different. This was competitive, under the lights, with points on the line.
UEFA's preview had pointed to several of Atlético's key names. Its Matchday 2 guide listed Jan Oblak, Barrios, Koke, Lookman, Jonathan David and Alex Baena in the possible home line-up, with no players out, via UEFA.
What makes this stand out is the shape of the night. One goal in the first minute. One in the closing stages. In between, a red card that ended United's hope of a comeback.
For fans, this means a loud night in Madrid and a quiet flight home from Spain. Atlético took their chances at both ends of the evening. United were punished for a fast start they never recovered from and a late foul that left them short-handed.
