Milo Manheim will lead Michael Showalter's new take on the romantic comedy Serendipity for Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax, Deadline reported in an exclusive on 13 October 2026. The casting attaches a lead actor to a known romantic comedy title. A lead role means Manheim will play one of the central characters around whom the love story turns.

Showalter does not call the film a straight remake or reboot. He describes it instead as a contemporary "rebuttal" of the original film, built around new characters, according to Deadline. In plain terms, that points to a film that answers the earlier story rather than copying it. New characters mean new names and new relationships at the heart of the film.

The script comes from Marc Klein, who wrote the original film. Showalter will produce with Jordana Mollick for Semi-Formal Productions, alongside Simon Fields, who produced the original, Deadline reported. The writer creates the screenplay and dialogue. Producers put the production together and guide it from development to delivery.

Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy and Thom Zadra will act as executive producers for Miramax, alongside Klein. Executive producers usually guide a film's business and creative direction without handling day-to-day production. Their credit places the project with Miramax, which is backing the film with Amazon MGM Studios.

The directing job was announced in August, when Deadline reported that casting was under way. That early report set up an open search for the new ensemble. Casting is taking shape. The Manheim announcement follows that search and gives the production a confirmed star.

Manheim has another studio role waiting. He is set to play Flynn Rider opposite Teagan Croft in Disney's live-action Tangled, due for cinema release on 31 March 2028, Deadline reported. Live action means real actors on screen rather than animation. A dated cinema release gives theatres, in the United States and Canada plus other markets, a fixed point on the calendar.

Romantic comedy, as a genre, follows a love story with humour at its core. What makes this stand out is the blend of old and new. The original writer and producer are back, while the story moves forward with different people and a different point of view.
