Xbox has created Xbox Labs, a small team for building early, experimental versions of what play could look like next.

The unit was announced on 13 October 2026 by Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma, in a message to staff published on Xbox Wire. Xbox Wire Xbox describes it as a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists who will turn emerging ideas into things players and developers can try for themselves. Eurogamer

The lab will be led by Xbox chief technical officer Scott Van Vliet. He previously led Azure for OpenAI at Microsoft, the cloud computing work that supported the AI company.

Reporting on the launch frames the early focus around ports and prototypes. That includes games rapidly decompiled, meaning pulled apart and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never made for, and remixed vibe-coded ports, meaning versions put together largely by prompting AI coding tools rather than writing every line by hand.

Xbox itself is keeping the public pitch broad. Its dedicated site at labs.xbox.com is titled "XBOX Labs | Let's play with what's next" and carries the line "Explore, experiment, and create what's next in play". Players and developers can sign up there for updates on progress. Xbox Labs

The Xbox Wire post, listed under Future of Play as "Introducing XBOX LABS" and as a 3-minute read, gives no product dates and names no games. It also does not mention AI at all. Kotaku

That low-key wording sits alongside a longer research history. Xbox Research has been running gaming research at Microsoft and Xbox for over 20 years, work that has usually stayed behind the scenes.

What makes this stand out is the structure. This is not a studio with a release date. It is a public-facing lab, with its own site and signup, built to test ideas in the open and learn from how players and developers respond.
