Guild Wars 2 players no longer have to pay separately to keep the story in order. ArenaNet has folded the game's Living World episodes into their related expansions, ending standalone charges for those seasonal chapters Eurogamer.

Living World is the name for shorter story releases that link the major beats of Guild Wars 2's overall tale. An expansion is a large paid add-on, usually with new zones, characters and story missions. Until this change, those linking episodes were sold apart from the main expansions, which left new arrivals with an extra set of purchases if they wanted every chapter in sequence.

The new arrangement ties each season to a specific release. Owners of the base Guild Wars 2 game receive Living World Season 1. Buyers of the Heart of Thorns expansion receive Living World Season 2. Living World Seasons 3 and 4 are packaged alongside the Path of Fire expansion, while the final Living World season comes with the End of Dragons expansion.

There is no claim process for existing owners. Any missing episodes from these seasons will be added automatically to accounts that already own the associated expansion. That applies across the full set, so a player who owns Path of Fire but never bought Season 3 should now find it unlocked.

There is also cover for very recent buyers. Players who bought any of the affected Living World content after 12 September will have gems added to their account as recompense. Gems are Guild Wars 2's premium in-game currency, bought with real money and spent in the game's store. The recompense also covers players who bought bundles that included the appropriate expansions.

ArenaNet set out the detail in a Guild Wars 2 news post titled "Living World Seasons Are Now Included with Guild Wars 2 Expansions", published on 13 October 2026 Guild Wars 2. The official post notes that Seasons 3 and 4 are included in the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle. The studio said its goal is to make jumping into Guild Wars 2 as seamless as possible by increasing the value of expansions and simplifying purchasing options.

For players, this means a clearer route through a story told over more than a decade. Buy the expansion and the chapters around it come with it. Old gaps close on their own, and recent spending is returned in store currency.
