Ben Katovsky is the new chief executive of Pipeline, the lender for independent music companies. The appointment was confirmed on 15 October 2026, according to Billboard. Pipeline was founded and is chaired by Matt Spetzler, a former private equity executive at Francisco Partners.

Pipeline lends to independents, the labels and distributors that compete with the three majors, Universal, Sony and Warner. It launched with $200 million in lending capital. Its model advances money to artists using a label's digital royalties as collateral, which means future income from streaming secures the loan.

The company has also formed a partnership with Merlin and acquired music valuation firm Clarty Partners. The first deal connects it to independent labels around the world. The second gives it in-house skill for pricing song catalogues, the bundles of rights that produce royalties over time.

Katovsky arrives from Recognition Music Group, the Blackstone-backed rights owner he ran as chief executive. He spent seven years at BMG and rose to chief operating officer. He later joined Hipgnosis Song Management as president and chief operating officer, taking up the role on 1 October 2022 and reporting directly to chief executive Merck Mercuriadis.

At Recognition, he oversaw a $372 million asset-backed security issuance before the catalogue sale. That is a bond deal backed by royalty income, which lets a rights owner raise cash against future earnings. The portfolio later sold to Sony Music Publishing in July totalled 45,000 songs. It included compositions by Neil Young, Shakira, Journey and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Spetzler brings finance weight. He has led $5 billion in music and audio investments during his time at Francisco Partners and now at Jamen Capital, according to Billboard's Finance 50 list for 2026.

What makes this stand out is the fit. Katovsky has run one of the largest song portfolios in the business. Pipeline needs that valuation experience to lend to smaller companies with confidence.

For independent labels, the pitch is simple. They can borrow against money they are already owed. They do not have to sell their rights to get cash to sign acts, pay staff or fund releases.
