Britain's Association of True Crime Producers is going global.

The group confirmed on 15 October 2026 that it has opened membership to indies, meaning independent production companies, outside Britain for the first time. Seven companies have joined in the first international intake, according to Deadline.

Three join from the United States: Gennie Studios, My Entertainment and Texas Crew Productions. The rest span three continents. Perpetual joins from Australia, Southern Exposure from South Africa, Our Story from New Zealand and Serial Maven Studios from Canada.

The Association, known as the ATCP, exists to develop professional standards in true crime production. That is the factual, unscripted genre built around real criminal cases. Members sign up to guidelines around victim protection. They also attend events and host seminars on how the shows are made.

The chair is Kate Beal, boss of Woodcut Media. The group was formed three years ago, in 2023, by true crime specialists from the UK and Ireland, according to Deadline.

It describes itself as an association of television producers seeking to promote best practice within the true crime genre. It operates as a non-profit association, as reported by WorldScreen, and runs its official website at atcp.tv. Membership is open to TV and film production companies, digital or podcast content producers, or individuals directly engaged in true crime production.

That UK base already includes Avalon, FirstLook TV, ITN Productions, Monster Films, Peninsula Television, Phoenix Television and Rare TV. The group has also run a webinar with the Film and TV Charity, which supports people working behind the camera.

One new joiner points to where standards are heading. Gennie Studios works with factual producers to help them understand and responsibly use generative AI in non-fiction programming, including true crime.

What makes this stand out is scale. True crime travels easily across borders. Production ethics have largely stayed national. For viewers, nothing changes on screen right now. Behind the camera, more teams will now work to the same playbook on victim care.
