Cyberpunk 2 director shares gamer and punk roots in new CD PROJEKT RED feature

The boss of Cyberpunk 2 grew up as a gamer and a punk. That is where CD PROJEKT RED starts its new portrait of the sequel's director.
The studio published the feature on 13 October 2026. It is titled "Why Games? Why CD PROJEKT RED? Why Cyberpunk 2?" CD PROJEKT RED. The piece centres on Gabe Amatangelo, who serves as vice-president and game director on Cyberpunk 2 — the person who leads the creative direction of the game.
Amatangelo is not new to Night City. He previously served as game director on Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the large story expansion that added the Dogtown district to the base game.
One story from that production has followed him. The checkpoint that leads players into Dogtown went through many versions. The team called it "Gabe's Wall".
The nickname came from iteration. Amatangelo pushed the sequence again and again to get the entry right. It stuck.
The feature describes Amatangelo sharing his experience growing up as a gamer and a punk. It frames those roots as part of why he makes games, why he joined the Polish studio, and why he is leading its next Cyberpunk project.
The blog arrives close behind another look inside the team. On 1 October 2026, the studio released AnsweRED Podcast Episode 33, titled "Growing the Vision", about Boston and the future of Cyberpunk CD PROJEKT RED. That episode covers how a vision for a game takes shape, changes through collaboration, and is shared across teams.
For players, Boston matters. CD PROJEKT RED opened a North American studio there to help build what comes next. The follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077 was first announced under the codename Project Orion, a working title used while a game is in early development CD PROJEKT RED.
What makes this stand out is the focus on process over product. No release date was announced. No platforms were listed. The story is about people and decisions.
For fans, this means patience. Amatangelo told Game File in a March 2024 interview that his team could repeat what the studio achieved on Cyberpunk 2077 Game File. The new feature does not add promises to that. It gives context on who is guiding the work.
