Erin Boothman, Anna Morris, Millie Couzens and Josie Knight have won gold in the women's team pursuit at the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai.

The British quartet took the world title in the timed four-rider team event, with teams starting on opposite sides of the track and racing together against the clock and each other. BBC

Italy had arrived as the team to beat. Martina Alzini, Vittoria Guazzini and Martina Fidanza entered the championships as the defending champions after their victory in Santiago. UCI

Britain looked sharp from the early laps. The line-up of Morris, Couzens, Boothman and Knight moved through the qualifying rounds at the Shanghai velodrome. British Cycling

The final was about nerve as much as legs. Four riders. One line. No room for error.

Team pursuit looks simple from the stands. It is not. Riders take short turns at the front, full gas into the wind, then swing up the banking to rejoin the back of the line. The gaps must stay tight. A wheel lost is speed lost. Get the changes right and four riders move like one machine.

Britain rode it clean. The changes were smooth, the formation flat and fast around the black measuring line. When the pace bit late on, the line held together. That is what wins pursuits.

Couzens already knew the feeling of winning this event in a Great Britain jersey. She was part of the squad that took team pursuit gold at the European track championships. British Cycling

The gold gives Britain an early endurance anchor in Shanghai. It also lifts the mood after a narrow defeat in the sprint room, where the women's sprint trio including Emma Finucane and Sophie Capewell were edged out by China for the team sprint world title. Yahoo Sport

What makes this stand out is the blend. Morris and Knight bring experience of major championships. Boothman and Couzens bring fresh speed. In Shanghai, that mix delivered when it mattered, with three more days of racing still to come at these championships.
