Denmark's Crown Prince Christian turned 21 on Oct. 15, and the palace marked the day with new portraits in full military dress.

The Danish Royal House released the photos to celebrate the birthday, showing the heir in the red and blue gala uniform of the Royal Life Guards, the infantry regiment that guards Denmark's royal residences Town & Country.

The portraits were taken in the Vestibule of Christian VII's Palace at Amalienborg, the family's central Copenhagen residence made up of four palaces around a square. It is the first time Christian has been photographed in that gala uniform.

The choice of uniform points to his day job. Christian joined the military in 2025 and now serves as a second lieutenant and platoon commander with the Royal Life Guards at Høvelte Barracks, north of Copenhagen.

He wore two honors with the uniform. He received the Order of the Elephant, Denmark's highest order of chivalry, on his 19th birthday. Ahead of his 21st, his father, King Frederik, awarded him the Grand Commander's Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog, a second historic order for service to Denmark. Grand Commander is its highest rank, reserved for royals who already hold the Order of the Elephant.

Christian became first in line to the throne in January 2024, when his grandmother Queen Margrethe abdicated and his father became king. For Americans keeping score, that makes him the Danish equivalent of the Prince of Wales: the next king.

He was born in Copenhagen on Oct. 15, 2005, a birth marked with a 21-gun salute from Kronborg Castle in Elsinore Tatler.

What makes this stand out is how fast the transition has been. In less than three years he went from teenager to heir to officer. The portraits put that shift in one frame.
