Anna Faris says she was hurt by Chuck Lorre's version of her exit from Mom.

She responded in an Instagram statement on Thursday. The note was posted directly to her followers. She said she had read his comments. She had not seen them coming, and they hurt.

Lorre addresses the casting in his new memoir, Sitcom, meaning a first-person book about his life and career. He wrote that his early reluctance to cast Faris as Christy Plunkett was, in fact, correct. He also wrote that she left after six years for mysterious reasons that were not mysterious to anyone on the show, as reported by Deadline.

Faris answered in warm but direct language. She said Lorre gave her a job she loved. She said she never took a day of Mom for granted across seven years on the series. She said she was proud of what they made together and remained grateful for those people and years.

She also shared a personal update in the same statement. She said she has been sober for a year and a half. She gave no further detail beyond that line, and she did not connect it to any single event on the show.

Faris played recovering alcoholic Christy Plunkett for the first seven seasons of Mom. She left the show in 2020 to pursue new opportunities. That departure came after a long run at the centre of the series. Allison Janney, her co-lead, stayed on as sole lead for the eighth and final season, meaning the series continued built around one central performer. That last run ended in 2021.

Janney said after the departure that Faris and her character were missed on set, according to People. The show continued without Christy. It closed after eight seasons in total.

For fans who watched Christy across seven years and made her one of their favourite characters, this is a rare open exchange years after the exit. One side calls the reasons clear to those inside the production. The other side calls the job loved, the work shared and the criticism painful to read.

No new project between Faris and Lorre was announced alongside the statements. The exchange leaves two different memories of the same long run on record. It also leaves Faris's own account of those seven years stated in her words.
