Judd Apatow has retold the life of comedian Norm Macdonald in a Netflix documentary drawn entirely from old footage.

Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, directed by Apatow, was reviewed by Variety on 16 October 2026. Apatow had announced on 16 September that the film would stream on Netflix US in October, in a post on his official Facebook page.

Netflix credits Apatow as both director and producer of the title, according to Netflix. Its official title page lists the project as a documentary on Macdonald. Variety has described it as an intimate portrait of the Saturday Night Live comedian.

The production uses no new interviews. It is built entirely from archival footage, personal photos and rare home videos, as reported by Variety in August. That catalogue forms the full visual record.

Macdonald's network television debut came on 9 May 1990 on Late Night with David Letterman, according to Variety's review. He joined Saturday Night Live in 1993. He then spent four seasons fronting Weekend Update, the show's spoof news desk.

His exit became part of his legend. Macdonald was fired after repeatedly joking that O.J. Simpson had murdered his wife. The decision was taken by Don Ohlmeyer, then president of NBC's West Coast division. Ohlmeyer was Simpson's best friend.

What makes this stand out for viewers is the method. With only archive to work from, the humour, setbacks and off-stage moments have to speak for themselves. For anyone who never saw Macdonald live, it is a straight path into a career that moved from late-night spots to one of American television's best-known chairs.
