Norm Macdonald fought cancer twice in his life and told almost no one.

That quiet history is at the heart of Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, a Netflix documentary about the comedian that arrived on 16 October. Netflix had locked that date as part of its autumn slate of comedy documentaries Netflix.

Netflix presents Macdonald as a stand-up and Saturday Night Live legend, and as a master of deadpan humour, meaning comedy delivered flat and without a smile. The film was flagged in the service's October 2026 line-up and given its own title page on the platform. It is directed by Judd Apatow, and Netflix put out the trailer in September ahead of release Yahoo.

The story the film uncovers starts in the 1980s. In interview clips, comedian Harland Williams, described as one of Macdonald's oldest friends, reveals that Macdonald quietly battled stomach cancer during that decade Variety. It was years before Macdonald became widely known to television audiences, and the illness was never made public at the time.

A second diagnosis followed decades later. In 2013, Macdonald was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He shared the news only with his family, his agent and his ex-wife. He hid it from the public and even from his closest friends, keeping treatment and its effects out of view.

One effect could not be fully hidden. Macdonald was prescribed dexamethasone, and the drug caused him to gain considerable weight. The documentary links that visible change to treatment. The weight gain was seen, the cause was not.

Macdonald said he had a model for staying silent. He said he was inspired to keep his cancer private by actor Richard Farnsworth. Farnsworth battled terminal cancer in secret and took his own life with a gun in October 2000. Macdonald kept that example close as he made the same choice about his own illness.

For people watching now, the details reframe what they remember. A change in appearance that once passed without explanation now has a cause. A comedian known for holding back on stage, it turns out, was holding back much more off it.
