Modern Warfare 4 to close chapter and launch a new one, Activision says

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will close one story and open another.

Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl called the game "the epic conclusion of this recent series of Modern Warfare" in an interview with The Game Business. He said the publisher was excited by "closing this chapter and launching a new one", as reported by Video Games Chronicle.

The shooter has a release date of 23 October 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Activision's official blog notes that the next chapter begins on 23 October with Modern Warfare 4, according to Call of Duty. Development is led by Infinity Ward, the studio behind the rebooted Modern Warfare run.

The launch line-up centres on multiplayer, the head-to-head online mode where players compete in teams across maps and objectives. Activision has named Inflation, Hijack, Collateral and Frontline among the modes available at launch, as detailed by Call of Duty. On PC, the game will be available through three storefronts: Battle.net, Steam and Xbox on PC. That choice matters for players who keep libraries in different places, since progress and purchases can sit with the storefront.

Nintendo players get the same launch date. Modern Warfare 4 has a release date of 23 October 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-orders for that version began on 26 August. An Xbox listing also points to a Campaign Early Access start date of 16 October 2026, a week before the full launch, for players who want to play the scripted solo missions first, according to Xbox.

Bahl spoke in his role as Activision's marketing chief. The interview was published on 16 October 2026, seven days before the full release. That timing puts his comments squarely in launch week.

What makes this stand out is the framing. Many sequels promise more of the same. Here the pitch is an ending and a restart in one package. For fans, this means one arc finishes on 23 October, with a new one to follow.
