Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access begins October 16 as Infinity Ward says 'Time to Go Dark'

Infinity Ward has told Call of Duty players it is “Time to Go Dark” as Campaign Early Access for Modern Warfare 4 begins on October 16. The message was announced on October 15, 2026 Infinity Ward. It is a spoiler warning before the story-led mode opens. The studio wants players to experience the plot fresh.
Early Access unlocks the full Campaign, the single-player story missions played solo, from Friday, October 16 (PT). Access is tied to digital pre-orders, so players who pre-ordered the digital version can start then. Guidance published on October 13, 2026 confirms that start point Activision Support. It gives story players a full week before the wider launch.
On PC, players could prepare files in advance. Preloading, which means downloading much of the game before it can be played, began on October 15 at 9AM PT. That timing was set out in PC details published on September 9, 2026 Call of Duty Blog. It helps players with slower connections be ready for the October 16 start. Once the time arrives, the game unlocks rather than downloading from zero.
Pre-orders remain the route in. They are available at participating retailers, in-game, on platform stores, or at CallofDuty.com. The Campaign Early Access offer itself is valid until October 23, 2026. That end date matches the full game launch. Players who come in later still join at the same endpoint.
Launch week has two more dates to note. DMZ Early Access, early entry to the separate DMZ mode, starts on October 20. It is included with all digital editions, according to the same October 13 support guidance. Then the full game launches on October 23 Call of Duty Blog. Those dates give digital buyers a staggered path into release.
The campaign has been the focus of Infinity Ward’s public build-up. In June the studio released the first episode of “From the Ward,” a behind-the-scenes breakdown of how it crafted the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign. At the time it said every aspect of Modern Warfare 4 is anchored in the game’s narrative. That framing puts story first, before multiplayer and other modes.
For fans, this means a simple ask over the next few days. Infinity Ward closed its October 15 note with a direct plea: “Let everyone discover what happens next on their own.” No clips, no plot details, just space to play it through.
Start times use PT, Pacific Time on the west coast of the United States, so the exact hour will read differently in other regions. Players should check their own platform store for the unlock message. A short wait can follow as files verify.
