Street Fighter threw the first punch of the weekend with $4 million from Thursday previews in the United States and Canada, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Paramount Pictures is releasing Legendary's video game adaptation in more than 3,500 North American theatres. That scale gives it the widest footprint of the weekend's four new arrivals. Previews began at 2 p.m. on Thursday, with a 7 p.m. fan event folded into the evening.

The film is directed by Kitao Sakurai and stars Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji and Callina Liang. It carries an $82 million production budget before marketing costs, and is projected to open in the mid-$30 millions domestically, the industry term for the United States and Canada, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A24's You Can See Everything was next among the newcomers with $1.7 million from Thursday previews. It is opening in 855 North American theatres, a platform-style release that is far narrower than a studio tent-pole. The film centres on Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in the period before she began her prison sentence, and was made for $5 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Focus Features' Sense and Sensibility took $1.1 million from Thursday previews in 2,436 North American locations. Focus projects an $8 million opening weekend. The production budget sits in the mid-$20 millions, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

20th Century Studios' Whalefall rounded out the night with $900,000 from Thursday previews. It is playing in 3,065 North American locations. The studio expects a $10 million to $12 million opening against a $60 million budget, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Thursday money is only a first read. It captures fans who book early evening shows, not families or casual viewers who turn up on Friday and Saturday. What makes this stand out is the spread. One broad action release, two mid-range studio titles and a small-budget A24 entry are all chasing different audiences on the same weekend.

Full weekend numbers will sharpen the picture when studio estimates arrive on Sunday and actual ticket counts are confirmed on Monday.
