The cast and creative team behind Michael will receive the Gotham Musical Tribute at the 36th Annual Gotham Film Awards, after the film passed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, Variety reported.

Director Antoine Fuqua, actors Colman Domingo, Jaafar Jackson and Nia Long, and producer Graham King are set to accept the honour. The announcement was published on Oct. 16, with the current awards season starting to take shape.

The film was written by John Logan and produced by King alongside John Branca and John McClain. Its wider ensemble also includes Laura Harrier, Juliano Krue Valdi and Miles Teller.

The tribute will be presented on Nov. 30 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, where the Gothams hold their annual ceremony. It is a special prize given outside the competitive categories, honouring work centred on music and performance.

Nominees for this year's competitive Gotham Awards will be announced on Oct. 27. That list will set out the films and performances in contention, separate from the evening's previously announced tributes.

The Musical Tribute is still new. It was introduced last year for Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson of Song Sung Blue, the story of a couple who form a Neil Diamond tribute act.

What makes this stand out is the speed. A second-year award usually takes time to find its pattern, but the Gothams have used it twice for large, performance-led music films with broad cinema audiences.

Other special honours for this year's ceremony have also been set. Director Danny Boyle will receive the Gotham Director Tribute for Ink, while La Bola Negra will receive the Gotham Vanguard Tribute. Laika Studios, the animation studio, will receive the Gotham Anniversary Tribute.

For audiences, the Nov. 30 ceremony is an early marker in the film awards calendar. The tributes bring casts and film-makers together in one room before the competitive winners are decided later that night.
