Danny Boyle will receive the Director Tribute at the 36th annual Gotham Film Awards, as reported by Deadline on September 30. The tribute is a career honour. It recognises a director's body of work rather than one single release.

The ceremony is set for November 30 at Cipriani Wall Street. Nominees for this year's Gotham Film Awards will be announced on October 27, Deadline reported. That timetable leaves a month between the shortlist and the night itself.

Boyle won the Best Director Oscar in 2009 for Slumdog Millionaire. The film won eight Oscars in total, including Best Picture, the ceremony's top award. The Academy Awards, voted on in the United States, are the film industry's best-known prizes.

In 2012, Boyle directed the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics. The ceremony is the live opening show that starts each Olympic Games. His edition opened the London Games to a huge global television audience.

His latest feature is Ink. It opened last month's Venice Film Festival, where new films play for the first time before critics, buyers and audiences. Set in the United Kingdom in 1969, the story centres on the beginnings of tabloid journalism, the fast, bold style of popular newspapers built around short stories, big headlines and pictures. At its heart is Rupert Murdoch's launch of The Sun.

Jack O'Connell and Claire Foy star alongside Guy Pearce, who plays Murdoch. Ink comes from Netflix. It will play in theatres from December 11 before arriving on the streamer on January 8, 2027. That period in cinemas first, then streaming, is known as the theatrical window.

Boyle is also scheduled to discuss his career at a Screen Talk during the 2026 BFI London Film Festival, according to the BFI. A Screen Talk is an on-stage conversation in front of a festival audience. At the Gothams, Laika will receive the Anniversary Tribute, an award that marks a milestone for a recipient. The awards are presented by the Gotham Film & Media Institute, led by executive director Jeffrey Sharp.

For fans, this means a clear run-up. November brings the tribute in New York. December brings the cinema release.
