Qatar names more than 120 artists for first Rubaiya quadrennial

More than 120 artists will feature in the first Rubaiya Qatar, a new nationwide event for contemporary art opening in November 2026.
That figure comes from the latest artist-list announcement, reported by ARTnews on 16 October 2026. It is the most up-to-date count for the inaugural edition, which simply means the first one.
Rubaiya Qatar is organised by Qatar Museums in Doha, the public body that runs the country's museums. It is described as a quadrennial, which means a large exhibition held every four years. This one is designed to run nationwide, with work shown in different places rather than in a single building.
The programme for that first edition was set out by Qatar Museums, as reported by Canvas on 14 October 2026. An earlier announcement in February had introduced the project as a new contemporary art quadrennial for Qatar. Contemporary art here means work being made now, by living artists.
At its centre is a flagship exhibition titled Unruly Waters. It will anchor the inaugural quadrennial, in other words act as its main show around which other activity sits. It is scheduled to run from 21 November to 30 April, according to ArtReview.
The published list covers artists from many countries. It includes Bani Abidi, listed as a participating artist from Pakistan. It also includes Nicholas Galanin, listed as a participating artist from the United States and named for Unruly Waters.
The list is long. Names stretch past one hundred. Those two examples give a sense of that reach, from South Asia to North America, with many more nationalities on the full roster.
What makes this stand out for a general audience is the format. Visitors will not go to one hall for one afternoon. They will move between venues across the country, with the central exhibition staying open for more than five months.
For fans, this means time to plan. November brings the opening. The long run through to April leaves room for a visit later in the season, and for word to spread about what to see first.
