Art Basel Qatar Returns to Doha in January 2027 With 82 Galleries

Art Basel Qatar will return to Doha from 28 to 30 January 2027, with 82 galleries from 37 countries spread across three venues in the city's Msheireb Downtown district. ArtNews reported the details on 27 October 2026.
The three venues are Barahat Msheireb, M7 and the Doha Design District. Art Basel, the international fair group that runs the event, has also set preview days on 26 and 27 January. Preview days give invited guests and collectors a first look before the public arrives.
Galleries are the businesses that show and sell art on behalf of artists. At this edition, each gallery booth, the stand a gallery builds on the fair floor, will feature a solo presentation, meaning the work of a single artist. Half of the artists come from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, and more than a third of the galleries operate in those regions.
Six galleries are taking part for the first time: Efie Gallery, Iyad Qanazea, Le LAB Gallery, Alhosh Gallery, Contemporary Art Platform and Dastan Gallery. The first edition, held in 2026, brought 84 artists represented by 87 galleries, according to Art Basel.
The theme for 2027 is "between". Wassan Al-Khudhairi, the Iraqi artistic director, came up with the idea. Her appointment to lead the fair into its second year was announced in May.
Art Basel says it wants to make the fair easier for galleries to work with. Participating galleries get help with customs clearance, which is the paperwork that lets art cross a border. They also get transport within Qatar, shared storage and installation services, and hotel rooms for up to two staff. Exhibiting artists have their travel and hotel costs covered.
There is also help if work does not sell. Art Basel will pay half the cost of sending unsold pieces back out of the country, up to US$20,000 per gallery. Shipping an artwork can be one of the largest costs for a small gallery, so that cap is a concrete number for each exhibitor to plan around.
The fair's partners are Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), QC+ and Visit Qatar. Art Basel says the partnership is meant to build closer ties with collectors, support galleries, and keep interest going between editions. A new programme called the Collectors Majlis will bring together local and international collectors, galleries and institutions. "Majlis" is an Arabic word for a gathering place where people meet and talk.
For the people who crate, insure and hang these works, the practical support is the part to watch. Each booth, each shipment and each flight is a cost that someone has to cover, and the fair has now put its own figures on the table.
