Swansea sit top as Matos turns method into momentum
Swansea City are top of the Championship 10 games into the season.
As of 17 October 2026, that is the reward for almost a year under Vitor Matos, the Portuguese head coach who arrived with barely any senior management on his CV BBC Sport.
Matos took charge in November 2025. He replaced Alan Sheehan in the Swansea dugout.
Twelve games. That was it. Before Swansea, Matos had managed only 12 senior matches, all in the Portuguese second division with Maritimo.
His playing record did not explain the appointment. His coaching miles did. His journey in coaching spans 23 years across continents and roles, taking in FC Porto, Shandong Taishan in China and Liverpool BBC Sport.
At Liverpool he spent five years working under Jurgen Klopp as an elite development coach. He was listed as a development pathway coach there in 2019, helping bridge the academy and the first team. After Anfield he followed Pep Lijnders to Red Bull Salzburg as his number two.
Matos has said that Liverpool shaped his football. The pressing, hunting the ball in packs, and the counter-pressing, trying to win it straight back after losing it, became the foundation for his Swansea team.
In south Wales he has kept it simple and settled. Swansea play with a consistent back four in a 4-3-3, that is four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards, built around pressing and winning the ball back fast.
He told supporters early on that he wanted a clear on-field identity they could recognise and get behind. By May, ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, he said Swansea had put a good base in place.
The start to this season backed him up. Swansea took 17 points from their opening eight games, with striker Zan Vipotnik’s goals vital to that run.
The players bought in quickly. Liam Cullen described Matos as a “breath of fresh air”, although Cullen also said the squad had to take some responsibility during a slump in form.
What makes this stand out is the speed of the change. A coach known for development, not for first-team results, has turned method into momentum. For fans, this means something to feel together again, a team at the top of the league with a style you can spot from the first five minutes.
