Orlando Jones is the new Papa Legba in American Horror Story season 13, taking on a role originated by Lance Reddick.

The season premiered on September 24 on FX and Hulu, according to FX. The anthology series, meaning each season tells a separate story, was created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Papa Legba was introduced in season 3, Coven. That season follows young girls sent to a special school in New Orleans amid escalating attacks. The character later returned in season 8, Apocalypse. He has the power to grant immortality, according to Variety.

Reddick originated the part and died in 2023. Jones said Reddick was a friend of his. He was a friend. Jones said he auditioned using Reddick's material from the earlier seasons.

Jones said he sought to honour Reddick's legacy while bringing his own interpretation to the role, according to TheWrap and TV Insider.

In season 13, Papa Legba stands as an ally of the Coven and a source of information about Satan's plan. Satan is also known as Mr. Nas and is played by Paul Anthony Kelly. His son is revealed to be Ben, played by Joey Pollari.

That reveal drives the latest episode. Episode 10 is titled 'The Prodigal Son' and ends with Ben arriving at the Coven's doorstep. An earlier episode, episode 6, is titled 'The Coven of 13'.

For viewers catching up, the Coven links back to familiar faces. Jessica Lange played Fiona Goode, Sarah Paulson played Cordelia Foxx and Kathy Bates played Madame Delphine LaLaurie in Coven.

What makes this stand out is the handover. One actor picks up where another left off, and the story keeps the door open for both to be remembered.
