Whalefall Built a Real Whale Stomach to Swallow Austin Abrams

Austin Abrams spends almost all of Whalefall trapped inside a sperm whale. He plays Jay, a teenager swallowed whole in the thriller directed by Brian Duffield, according to Variety.
The whale is huge. It is described as 80 feet long and 60 tons, and bringing it to life fell to production designer Ramsey Avery — the person in charge of the film's physical world, from sets to textures.
Avery did not rely on computer graphics alone. His team built about 30 feet of the whale's head, with an articulating mouth that could drive forward and back on a ram. For the stomach scenes, they built a 60-foot-wide tank that was 20 feet deep.
Then came the stomach itself. The base was upholstery foam two to three inches thick. The interior was layered with translucent, coloured silicone for a wet, viscous look. The exterior was wrapped in heavy-duty canvas coated with glue, stiff enough to hold shape but flexible enough to move.
Fully expanded, the inside measures about eight feet wide and six feet tall. Small. Claustrophobic by design. Cinematographer Aaron Morton — the head of the camera and lighting team — shot Abrams inside that tight space to keep the effect in-camera, meaning captured live on set rather than added later.
To get the biology right, Avery consulted Dr Joy Reidenberg, a biomedical research scientist, on sperm whale autopsies. Her references fed both the physical build and digital models scaled from real stomach anatomy, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. Weta Workshop then added further digital effects work on the stomach.
Josh Brolin plays Jay's father, the other anchor of the story. Director Duffield hopes the survival tale inspires awe of whales rather than fear, while Brolin has said he hopes the film avoids a Jaws-style backlash against the animals, according to Reuters.
What makes this stand out is the choice to make Abrams feel it. A real, squeezable set pushes back. For fans, that means most of what you see around Jay was actually there with him in the tank.
