At least 19 people died and 25 were injured in a stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata, according to reports published on October 17, 2026.

The Free Press Journal reported at least 19 deaths and 25 injuries in the stampede at that pandal. It identified the site specifically as the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata. That identification places the incident at a named festival venue in the city.

The Jamaica Observer also reported on October 17 that 19 were dead and 25 hurt in a stampede at a religious gathering in India. In the same October 17 report, the toll was described as at least 17 people killed and two dozen more injured. The two formulations give different figures for the same incident on the same day.

A separate report from ANI, citing West Bengal Chief Minister Adhikari, put the toll from the Kolkata pandal stampede at 17 dead and 25 injured. That report attributed its casualty figures directly to Adhikari. It therefore differs from the higher death toll of at least 19 reported elsewhere on October 17.

After the Chorbagan pandal stampede, Adhikari announced compensation of 25 lakh and a government job for each victim's family. The announcement was reported by the Free Press Journal as the state response for the families of those who died. The compensation package combines a monetary payment with employment offered to each bereaved family.
