Georgina Cates, 2point4 Children actor, dies at 51

Georgina Cates, the English actor known for the BBC series 2point4 Children and the 1998 film Clay Pigeons, has died at the age of 51.
The death was announced on Saturday by Andrew Marshall, the creator of BBC’s 2point4 Children. Marshall said he had only just discovered the news when he posted on X. His message began with the words “I’m very sad to report.”
Cates died in May, according to Deadline. A cause of death was not immediately available. The Independent reported the date of death as 6 May and said news of it only became public after a delay. That gap explains why an event from the spring was first widely reported in October. Her daughter Naiia had announced her mother’s death in June.
Marshall’s post on X, published on 17 October, said he had just learned what had happened. The brief statement quickly became the focus of tributes and follow-up coverage. It remains the most direct public account of how the news emerged.
Several early reports described the death as sudden, including coverage by The Sun and the Daily Mail. No further details about the circumstances have been confirmed. The family has not issued a broader statement in the reporting to date.
Cates was born Claire Elaine Woodgate on 4 April 1975 in Colchester, Essex, England. She entered television as a teenager. She was 16 when she took the role of Jenny Porter in the first two seasons of 2point4 Children. The part made her a familiar face to BBC viewers and remains one of the roles most associated with her name.
Her best-known film role was Amanda in Clay Pigeons, released in 1998. The film was produced by Ridley Scott and also starred Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix. Almost a decade later, she won Best Actress in a Leading Role for Sinner at the 41st Brooklyn Arts Council International Film & Video Festival in 2007. The award recognised leading work outside the mainstream studio system.
She is survived by her children Naiia and Jakob. She shared both children with her ex-husband, actor Skeet Ulrich.
For viewers who knew her first as Jenny, the timing adds another layer to the loss. The family’s news came in June, the wider public only learned of it in October, and the months in between passed quietly.
