100 Autonomous Vehicles in Ukraine Show the Distance Between Marketed and Real Autonomy

Forterra disclosed this week that more than 100 of its Lancer vehicles—self-driving platforms built on Polaris ATVs—have been operating in combat zones across Ukraine for nine months, marking the largest deployment of autonomous ground vehicles in active combat by any US defense technology company TechCrunch.
The vehicles arrived in October 2025 under US defense funding. Since then they have logged more than 2,500 miles across 1,100 missions, carried 777,440 pounds of materiel in aggregate, and performed 52 casualty evacuations. Scott Sanders, Forterra's chief growth officer and a former US Marine, disclosed these figures directly to the press.
Each Lancer is fitted with a custom sensor and compute stack and runs on gasoline rather than battery power. It can carry 750 kilograms of cargo—roughly three times the payload of Ukraine's own domestically produced uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs), which tend to be lighter, battery-powered designs optimized for rapid, distributed manufacturing and cost control.
The reality versus the autonomy label
Here's the critical detail: most battlefield use has been teleoperated—that is, remotely piloted by a human operator—rather than fully autonomous. TechCrunch reports two reasons. First, the vehicles are considered too valuable to risk losing to an autonomy failure. Second, Forterra's underlying autonomous driving software is not yet judged ready for the unpredictability of live combat, including electronic warfare and GPS-denied conditions.
This gap between marketed autonomy levels and what actually happens in the field has haunted commercial autonomous vehicle programs for over a decade. We are now watching the same tension play out in a much higher-stakes setting. Sergeant Major Corey Wilkens, who leads a US Army program developing autonomous vehicle tactics, was quoted in TechCrunch's reporting, signaling that Pentagon doctrine work is tracking this deployment closely rather than treating it as a purely contractor-driven trial.
Funding and the broader contracting context
Forterra has raised more than $500 million in venture capital, with investors including XYZ Venture Capital and Moore Strategic Partners. The company has also been accumulating defense contracts through the first half of 2026: a US Marine Corps ROGUE-Fires Block 2 Production Award with prime contractor Oshkosh Defense (June 1), a $92 million ROGUE-Fires order (May 25), introduction of a new MESA Vehicle platform (April 28), and placement on the 2026 NatSec 100 Companies list (May 11) Forterra newsroom.
Notably, Forterra has not disclosed the Ukraine deployment in its own press materials. The story came entirely from direct interviews with TechCrunch, not from company announcement. For anyone tracking how defense contractors shape public perception of combat use versus domestic procurement, this silence is worth noting—it suggests a strategic choice about which milestones get promoted through official channels.
Ukraine's larger robot buildout
The Forterra deployment is a small part of a much larger Ukrainian pivot toward ground robotics. Ukraine plans to field 25,000 unmanned ground vehicles in the first half of 2026 alone, more than double the 2025 total, according to Defense News. Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has publicly stated the same target.
Against that backdrop, Forterra's 100-plus vehicles represent a narrow but symbolically important American contribution: the first sustained combat data set for a US-built autonomous ground platform, even though the bulk of the operational fleet on the ground remains Ukrainian-made.
The design contrast between the two approaches is instructive. Ukrainian UGVs prioritize light weight, battery power, and rapid, distributed production with lower per-unit cost. Forterra's Lancer trades that scalability for higher payload capacity and longer range between refueling—a choice that reflects its origins in US defense acquisition rather than wartime improvisation.
What the data actually shows
The 2,500 miles and 1,100 missions represent a credible operational record, but it is a record of reliable remote piloting under fire, not of an autonomous driving stack that can operate unassisted in contested electronic warfare and GPS-denied environments. What Forterra has validated to date is teleoperated logistics and casualty evacuation—meaningful capabilities, but distinct from autonomous maneuver in contact with enemy forces.
For procurement officers and program managers evaluating vendor claims across the industry, this distinction matters considerably. The next milestone will likely be whether autonomous ground systems can survive the unpredictability of more contested roles—and that milestone will determine how quickly these platforms move from resupply and evacuation toward frontline maneuver tasks.
